Spring Hill Primary School students got to meet a children性视界传媒檚 author Wednesday and have him sign copies of one of his books for them.

Bruce Hale, author of more than 70 books, signed copies of one of his latest installations in his 性视界传媒淐lark the Shark性视界传媒 series for Spring Hill students. The event was sponsored by VeraBank.

Hale has been a children性视界传媒檚 author for years, but he wasn性视界传媒檛 always a reader. He said that changed partway through his time in elementary school.

性视界传媒淲e had a very tragic thing happen in our house. We lost our TV,性视界传媒 he said. 性视界传媒淭he TV died, and my parents said they didn性视界传媒檛 have enough money to buy a new one, so they started reading to us, and that got me hooked on books because, before that, I just didn性视界传媒檛 care for books at all.性视界传媒

Raised in Southern California, Hale attended UCLA but eventually got tired of living in Los Angeles. He and a friend moved to Texas to work in the oilfield. He got connected with a geophysical survey crew. That job took him to Japan, and from there, he moved to Honolulu, Hawaii.

That性视界传媒檚 where he found a passion for writing children性视界传媒檚 books. He was inspired to write about the gecko; the common belief among Hawaiians is that the little critter is a sign of good luck. He self-published 性视界传媒淭he Legend of the Laughing Gecko性视界传媒 before a national book publisher took him on.

性视界传媒淐lark the Shark性视界传媒 is a lot like kindergarten students, Hale said.

性视界传媒淗e has a tremendous enthusiasm for life and no self-control,性视界传媒 Hale said. 性视界传媒淗is teacher helps him figure out a way that he can regulate himself, and he learns that, sometimes, you stay cool, but sometimes, a shark性视界传媒檚 got to do what a shark性视界传媒檚 got to do.性视界传媒

The series explores common themes, such as making friends, being afraid of the dark, sharing and more.

性视界传媒淭he key is to not let [students] know you性视界传媒檙e teaching them something,性视界传媒 Hale said. A book 性视界传媒渉as to be fun first, and then if there is some sort of underlying message contained in that, then that性视界传媒檚 great. But my primary goal is to write books for non-readers in a hurry, because I know we性视界传媒檙e competing with screens and activities and all that stuff. So, I try to make the books funny and fast and exciting.性视界传媒

Reading, Hale said, is a key foundation for a successful life.

性视界传媒淚f you can read well, you can do anything because you can educate yourself about it, but if you can性视界传媒檛 read well, the world is a closed book to you,性视界传媒 he said. 性视界传媒淲hat I like to do is encourage kids to read in the same way that I was encouraged, and the book that did it for me when I was in third grade was 性视界传媒楾arzan.性视界传媒 As soon as my dad read that to me, I性视界传媒檓 like, 性视界传媒極h my gosh. Books are great.性视界传媒 But before that, I had no use for them at all.性视界传媒
