The Longview Salvation Army性视界传媒檚 warehouse on Cotton Street was filled with toys, bicycles, clothes and more Wednesday morning, all ready for families to take home. The nonprofit organization性视界传媒檚 annual Angel Tree program was underway.

Since 1931, the program has given children and senior citizens what they want and need at Christmastime. Families in need sign up, and children and seniors 性视界传媒 the 性视界传媒渁ngels性视界传媒 性视界传媒 give the Salvation Army a list of three items they want and one item they need.

Their lists are hung on Christmas trees at the Longview Mall and local Walmart stores, where shoppers can choose which lists they性视界传媒檇 like to fulfill. They purchase the items and leave them at the Angel Tree location.

Once the goods are brought to the Salvation Army warehouse, they性视界传媒檙e sorted and grouped for volunteers to distribute to families in a drive-thru fashion. The Salvation Army also receives donations for the program.

This year, the program served about 1,000 性视界传媒渁ngels,性视界传媒 said Longview Salvation Army Capt. Tamara Robb.

性视界传媒淲e couldn性视界传媒檛 do it without the community性视界传媒檚 support, so we性视界传媒檙e very, very appreciative,性视界传媒 Robb said.

Cars lined up early Wednesday along Cotton Street before wrapping around the Salvation Army warehouse. Patricia and Michael Johnson waited for volunteers to bring them pajamas, towels and bed sheets that they would give to Patricia性视界传媒檚 92-year-old mother.

性视界传媒淚t means a lot,性视界传媒 Patricia Johnson said. 性视界传媒淚t really helps out.性视界传媒

Of the Angel Tree program, she said: 性视界传媒淲e性视界传媒檙e just so thankful for that. Thank you, Jesus.性视界传媒

After receiving Christmas goods, mother Alyn Castillo said: 性视界传媒淚t性视界传媒檚 actually a blessing. It really helps out, especially with how the economy is and everything. It性视界传媒檚 really nice to be able to give something to our children, even when we can性视界传媒檛 really afford it.性视界传媒

Terri Deike and other volunteers stood in line Wednesday morning inside the warehouse where they loaded shopping carts with goods and carried them to vehicles in the drive-thru line. The volunteers try to load 16 or 17 cars every 15 minutes, she said.

性视界传媒淚t性视界传媒檚 fabulous just to help people in the community who are in need,性视界传媒 Deike said.

Joe Simmons, general manager of Clean Cut Roofing, and fellow Clean Cut employees helped load cars. Simmons said employees enjoy serving others and are connected to the Salvation Army性视界传媒檚 mission.

性视界传媒淚t性视界传媒檚 wonderful,性视界传媒 he said. 性视界传媒淲e get to meet the people that are directly receiving the help and support the mission of Salvation Army. It allows our employees a break from the day-to-day work that they do and kind of see what our heart is behind our own company, and it性视界传媒檚 just helping other people in East Texas.性视界传媒

Dwayne Bennett, assistant corps sergeant major for the Longview Salvation Army, directed vehicles off Cotton Street into the warehouse parking lot. He said he was grateful that Longview police officers were helping control traffic along the road.

And he was glad to be participating in another Angel Tree event.

性视界传媒淚 love it,性视界传媒 he said. 性视界传媒淭his is my favorite time of the year. I look forward to it.性视界传媒

Why? 性视界传媒淏ecause it性视界传媒檚 showing joy to kids. 性视界传媒 The biggest part of life, make sure kids are happy. That性视界传媒檚 why I do it.性视界传媒
