Tyler Bain is home.

That性视界传媒檚 how he feels when he性视界传媒檚 navigating his motorized wheelchair in a gym at Pine Tree High School, giving instructions to P.E. students. It性视界传媒檚 how he feels when he性视界传媒檚 on the sidelines at a Pine Tree football practice in the morning or when he性视界传媒檚 making videos to help coaches and players dissect the game or for use by recruiters.

Bain, a Pine Tree and Stephen F. Austin State University graduate, was 4 years old when a car wreck left him paralyzed. He has been working his whole life to regain movement, and he walked across the stage at his high school graduation with the assistance of a walker.

He went to Stephen F. Austin and is now working on his master性视界传媒檚 degree while student teaching at Pine Tree.

性视界传媒淚t性视界传媒檚 where I lived for 12 years. I feel like I left a mark there, and I feel like I can help Pine Tree as much as I can,性视界传媒 Bain said while sitting in the living room of his home with his step-father, Kirt McBride. 性视界传媒淚t性视界传媒檚 a great school district, and I just, I feel like that性视界传媒檚 home for me. It性视界传媒檚 where I started, and that性视界传媒檚 kind of where I want to continue.性视界传媒

McBride recalled meeting Bain he was 4.

性视界传媒淚 was 25 years old when I started dating his mother, and I walked into her parents性视界传媒 house, and I had been told that she had a son that had been in an accident. When I walked in and saw him for the first time, he was laying on the floor in their living room,性视界传媒 as stiff as a board, McBride said. 性视界传媒淭here was no movement, period, when (Bain性视界传媒檚 mother) would pick him up to put him in bed at night. It was like, it was like picking up a piece of wood.... And I see this kid laying on the floor, 4 years old. He性视界传媒檚 got toys all around him, and he can性视界传媒檛 reach out there and touch them like a 4-year-old was supposed to be able to do.性视界传媒

He witnessed everything Bain went through over the years 性视界传媒 surgeries and painful physical therapy.

性视界传媒淎nd I saw things start to happen with him that we were told and they were told would probably never happen 性视界传媒 regaining some of the use of his arms, some of the use of the hands and the legs,性视界传媒 McBride said. 性视界传媒淭hat was all his determination. Because we could tell him all day long, you性视界传媒檙e not going to get any better unless you try, but we didn性视界传媒檛 have to say that. That determination was there from a very young age to get to the best point he could get to.性视界传媒

Bain defied the odds over and over again.

性视界传媒淲e were told that he won性视界传媒檛 be able to go to SFA. He won性视界传媒檛 make it down there .... He won性视界传媒檛 be able to get an education, and he has proved over and over and over again that (the predictions) were wrong,性视界传媒 McBride said.

For Bain, he had wondered when he was younger what he would do with his life, considering his situation and physical limitations.

性视界传媒淢y grandpa that passed when I was a sophomore, he would always tell me that I could do anything I set my mind to,性视界传媒 Bain said. 性视界传媒淎nd he always told me that, you know, I physically can性视界传媒檛 do much because of my situation, but mentally, I can do anything and to always do my best and build myself mentally and become as smart as I can, and I can do whatever that I set my mind to.性视界传媒

Enrolling at Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches didn性视界传媒檛 come without fears and worries for the family.

Bain has been there for about five years, graduating with his bachelor性视界传媒檚 degree in mass communications, with minors in sports business and athletic coaching. He expects to finish his Masters of Arts in Teaching in December, with a focus on kinesiology. He hopes to work as a physical education teacher and football coach.

性视界传媒淭hat was an experience to try to get to where I could live in Nacogdoches, but we figured it out and made it work,性视界传媒 Bain said.

He has an aunt and uncle who live in Nacogdoches and work at the college, so there was family there to help if he needed it. He lived in the Steen Hall dormitory the entire time because it was already equipped with the best modifications for him, including automatic doors that he could operate with his student I.D. A nurse at the university health clinic would help him during the day if needed. At night, he had a caretaker who would stay with him until the morning.

The experience of living away from his immediate family was scary for everyone. His mom called him every night for about a month, he said. Then, she slowed down how often she checked on him.

性视界传媒淪he knew I was where I was supposed to be and that I was taken care of,性视界传媒 Bain said.

At SFA, he helped with the college性视界传媒檚 football game film, editing it so the coaching staff could go back back over it. Then, he started attending player and coach meetings.

性视界传媒淭hey really got me involved on the coaching side, which is ultimately what I want to do,性视界传媒 Bain said.

While he性视界传媒檚 never been able to play football, he性视界传媒檚 an avid fan of all things related to the sport. He said he learned a lot by watching games on television 性视界传媒 and by playing Madden video games.

In middle school, he recalled 性视界传媒渢he talk,性视界传媒 about whether he wanted to be in athletics. Pine Tree made it possible for him to be a part of the football team in middle school, with Coach Kyle Burns letting him be the team manager during his seventh-grade through freshman years in school. As a sophomore, he moved more into the video side, where he would create highlight videos. In 2017, he was recognized with a staff member of the year award.

And now, he makes videos of Pine Tree性视界传媒檚 football players to help with college recruiting.

As a student teacher, he starts his day at 7:30 a.m. observing football practice. Then, he goes to the gym or classroom where the teacher he性视界传媒檚 working with, Burns, lets him lead the P.E. class and exercises.

性视界传媒淩ight now, currently we are going through a cornhole unit, and he is having me teach (the students) and go over the rules with them and show how to score, what the score is and the form and technique they should use. So he性视界传媒檚 really throwing me, basically throwing me in, and saying, 性视界传媒楬ere you teach. I want to see what you can do.性视界传媒 性视界传媒

Bain wants to change the perception that P.E. is just a free period.

性视界传媒淚 know that性视界传媒檚 a stereotype I hear from a lot of people, saying P.E. is not what it used to be; so I kind of what to change that especially around here, at least, to help kids be more active and healthier,性视界传媒 he said.

He was concerned about how the students would receive him.

性视界传媒淭hat was my main concern, was how are they going to see me being in my situation and wanting to teach, especially something like physical education, but they have accepted me like any other teacher,性视界传媒 Bain said. 性视界传媒淭hey listen, then they respond to me just like they do with Coach Burns, and they call me coach.性视界传媒

He性视界传媒檚 experienced one of those moments where he ran into a student at Walmart about a week into the school year.

性视界传媒淪he looked at me and said, 性视界传媒楬ey Coach Bain.性视界传媒 That did feel food 性视界传媒 like you remember who I am, and this was only after the first week,性视界传媒 he said. 性视界传媒淚t felt good that she remembered my name and knows who I am.性视界传媒

He joked with Burns on that particular day in the gym, after Bain summoned the high school students to review the rules for playing cornhole.

性视界传媒淚性视界传媒檒l demonstrate,性视界传媒 Burns said. 性视界传媒淚性视界传媒檒l be your Vanna White.性视界传媒

Bain smiled as he responded back. 性视界传媒淲e need to dress you up a little bit, maybe give you a wig and some makeup.性视界传媒

Burns said he has worked with Bain for a long time, describing him as a 性视界传媒済reat kid,性视界传媒 who loves football and loves working with kids.

性视界传媒淗e性视界传媒檚 done a good job,性视界传媒 he said. 性视界传媒淚性视界传媒檒l teach. He性视界传媒檒l watch me. Then, I性视界传媒檒l make him teach and then I性视界传媒檒l evaluate him. Everything that I性视界传媒檝e given him, he性视界传媒檚 worked on and gotten better.性视界传媒

Bain is moving to Pine Tree性视界传媒檚 Parkway Elementary School in October to continue his student teaching before graduating in December.

His step-father, McBride, described how Bain inspires people, including himself, wherever he goes. For Bain, he said the main reason he wants to be a teacher is to encourage and motivate students, using his own life as an example of what they can accomplish.

性视界传媒淚 would like to say that a lot of it is because I work hard, but a lot of it is all glory to God, because without him, I would not be here. I would not be alive. I would not be able to do what I do,性视界传媒 Bain said. 性视界传媒淚 believe He, God, got me where I性视界传媒檓 supposed to be. I was supposed to be at SFA and touch lives there. I性视界传媒檓 supposed to be at SFA or at Pine Tree and help kids there and teachers there.性视界传媒
