Letter: Easily pressured

Easily pressured

A conference promoting eugenics and fertility was held last weekend in the University of Texas at Austin性视界传媒檚 AT&T Conference Center, on the campus where I proudly served as a faculty member for 42 years. No words can describe fully the shame I feel.

To be clear, I do not believe the University of Texas (UT) or its affiliated conference center are legally required or otherwise obligated to rent space to racist individuals and organizations. To the contrary: There was a moral and academic reason for them to prevent this conference from being held. Banning them from campus would not have meant that UT somehow endorses or represents exclusively Democrat, liberal or progressive parties and ideologies.

Moreover, one cannot argue that there was a free speech rationale for hosting this conference. Afterall, hate speech is not free speech. I fear in our current political climate, where colleges and universities are being attacked, institutions are easily pressured by outside political forces to do things they normally would see as wrong.

My hope is that in the future the University of Texas and other universities stand up to these pressures and protect their schools from these outside political forces 性视界传媒 pressures that threaten the academic integrity and purpose of higher education. But for me there is no Hook 性视界传媒榚m Horns today.
