QUESTION: I read an article earlier this month about the recycling program in Longview following the fire at Rivers Recycling. I was confused by this statement made by Public Works Director Dwayne Archer: 性视界传媒淭here is currently no (materials recovery facility) in this area....性视界传媒
We took recycle items to the very busy drop-off site in Tyler. We were impressed by the well-run operation. Where does Tyler sell that material?
ANSWER: Tyler has stopped curbside recycling just like Longview because of the fire at Rivers Recycling. Also, the two recycling programs are quite different.
性视界传媒淲e used Rivers for curbside recycling,性视界传媒 said Adriana Rodriguez, Tyler性视界传媒檚 public information officer.
性视界传媒淲e also have a small recycling center,性视界传媒 she said, where people can bring recyclables where they sort them into different bins depending on what the items are. That facility is staffed with two people since people sort their own items into the different bins. Tyler has a machine that compresses cardboard.
性视界传媒淭he rest is really self-service,性视界传媒 Rodriguez said.
性视界传媒淔rom there we take people性视界传媒檚 pre-sorted materials and we sell those to other companies,性视界传媒 that recycle the items, she said.
Plastics go to FCC in Dallas; metal products to Tyler Iron and Metal; cardboard and paper to Evergreen Recycling; electronic components and computers to STS Electronic Recycling; and glass goes to Strategic Materials.
Dwayne Archer, Longview性视界传媒檚 Public Works director, noted the differences between recycling programs in the two cities. Tyler has a 性视界传媒渟ignificantly smaller recycling program性视界传媒 because there is an additional charge for recycling.
性视界传媒淏ecause this service is not offered to all of their citizens, it made sense for them to open a drop-off center for those not subscribed,性视界传媒 he said an in email. 性视界传媒淟ongview has the largest municipal recycling program in East Texas. We are looking at drop-off options, but the sheer cost of staff and equipment would make any benefit challenging to obtain.性视界传媒
I will note that people may still recycle glass in Longview because it does not go to Rivers Recycling. People may still drop off glass in the yellow-lidded bins at the compost site and around town:
飦 Gregg County Pct. 2 office, 3211 W. Marshall Ave., (behind the building by the dumpsters);
飦 City of Longview Compost Facility, 2020 Swinging Bridge Road;
飦 Fire Station No. 2, 708 N. Eastman Road (accessible from Leota Street, back side of fire station);
飦 Fire Station No. 3, 1133 E. Birdsong St.;
飦 Fire Station No. 7, 2711 Gilmer Road; and
飦 Longview Mall, 3500 McCann Road (near food court entrance).
