Longview ISD will close all campuses and district offices Thursday ahead of expected wintry precipitation.
"While roads may appear clear in the morning, hazardous driving conditions are expected when temperatures drop in the afternoon," the district said in a statement. "We will continue to monitor roadways and stay in contact with city safety officials in order to make the best decision for our staff and families for Friday. We will make that decision by Thursday evening."
The district said families and staff will be notified through automated calls and emails about Friday plans. Updates will also be posted on the district website, social media platforms and shared with local media outlets, such as the News-Journal.
"We are committed to making informed decisions for our staff and families and it is out of an abundance of caution that we have made this call," said Superintendent Dr. Marla Sheppard. "The safety of our students and staff will always be our top priority."
The district said the process for school closings or schedule adjustments considers:
Road conditions for safe travel by buses and cars;
The rate and expected duration of precipitation;
Existing snow or ice accumulation;
Conditions in parking lots and sidewalks; and
Reliable weather forecasts.
