Vernon Burks' career as a volunteer firefighter started by an accident ÐÔÊӽ紫ý” literally. Burks was driving along Loop 281 near Longview when he saw a wreck that had occurred on a bridge. Only one firefighter was at the scene. It turned out to be the chief of the Gum Springs Fire Department.
