QUESTION: Can you tell us what性视界传媒檚 happening with Braum性视界传媒檚 in Longview? When is it going to open?

ANSWER: Whew. Apparently, a lot of you REALLY LOVE Braum性视界传媒檚 Ice Cream and Dairy Store. A lot.

And I apologize it性视界传媒檚 taken me a bit to get y性视界传媒檃ll an update, but here it is: I don性视界传媒檛 have a date, and 性视界传媒 you性视界传媒檒l probably all need a hug after you hear this 性视界传媒 it could be a while before we see dirt moving for our very own Braum性视界传媒檚.

Braum性视界传媒檚 has purchased one piece of land in Longview, where Liberty Baptist Church previously was located, at 1500 W. Loop 281. No construction plans have been filed yet with the city of Longview, and Gordon Pulis, director of real estate at Braum性视界传媒檚 Retail & Marketing Services in Dallas, described to me what sounds like a lengthy process before construction would begin.

First, the site has inadequate water and sewer utilities for a restaurant. That step still has to go through permitting and bids, for instance, before work could start. Then, there are other hurdles.

Pulis explained that Braum性视界传媒檚 creates districts of restaurants, essentially so delivery isn性视界传媒檛 just to one restaurant in an area. Several stores are needed to make it more profitable, he said.

性视界传媒淚性视界传媒檓 still working on other sites in Longview and surrounding towns,性视界传媒 Pulis said, including Marshall, Kilgore and Henderson. 性视界传媒淭his restaurant isn性视界传媒檛 going to happen until we get other sites 性视界传媒 another district.性视界传媒

Because of all those factors, he said it would 性视界传媒渂e a while性视界传媒 before the Loop 281 building is constructed.

Q: My family lives in Gregg County, not the city of Longview. What are our options concerning recycling: newspaper, glass, plastic, batteries and lightbulbs, etc.? Does the county offer any recycling?

A: This is one of my most frequently asked questions (right up there with questions about traffic lights and missing television news personalities). I性视界传媒檓 sorry to say, though, that you性视界传媒檙e going to have to work pretty hard to recycle.

You can take paper, plastics and aluminum and steel cans to Rivers Recycling at 298 FM 1252 W. near Kilgore during business hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Longview has seven locations where anyone can drop off glass: Broughton Recreation Center, 801 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.; Gregg County Pct. 2, 3211 W. Marshall Ave No. A, (behind the building by the dumpsters); Hometown Hardware, 1341 Heritage Blvd., on the west side of the building; Lowe性视界传媒檚, 3313 N. Fourth St., by the entrance door; Hardin Ace Hardware, 106 Delwood Drive, behind the building; city of Longview Compost Facility, 2020 Swinging Bridge Road; and Fire Station No. 7, 2011 Gilmer Road, behind the station off Vicky Drive.

You also don性视界传媒檛 have to live in the city of Longview to drop off paper and plastic recyclables at the city性视界传媒檚 compost site, which is open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. (If you want to drop off yard waste, though, and you性视界传媒檙e not a Longview resident, you性视界传媒檒l have to pay.)

The Longview Green and Clean event takes place twice a year 性视界传媒 the next one is Nov. 10 at Lear Park 性视界传媒 and it offers some opportunities for recycling for people who live outside the city. Items that can be recycled even if you don性视界传媒檛 live in the city include batteries, paper, plastic and metal, eyeglasses, motor oil and antifreeze.

Some stores around town accept various kinds of lightbulbs and/or batteries for recycling, including Batteries Plus Bulbs at 530 E. Loop 281, Interstate Batteries and Home Depot. (That性视界传媒檚 not meant to be an all-inclusive list, just a starting point so you know what kinds of stores offer this service.) Check online or call the individual stores to see if they accept the bulbs and batteries you want to recycle.

Gregg County doesn性视界传媒檛 have a recycling service like the ones I just mentioned, but it does host cleanup days three times a year. The next event is 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 23 at: Pct. 1 Barn, 1779 FM 449, Longview; Pct. 3 Barn, 6174 FM 2206 (Harrison Road), Longview; and Pct. 4 Barn, 710 W. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in Kilgore.

Households may dispose of two tires each at this event, along with bulk items, household trash and old appliances. Metal collected during the event is taken to the scrap yard. Televisions, propane tanks, batteries, electronics, paint and chemicals are not accepted.
