Longview police say an officer was shot and injured late Saturday while attempting to arrest a suspect.

Police were dispatched at 11:22 p.m. Saturday to the 700 block of Lincoln Drive for a vehicle burglary in progress.

"Once on scene, officers discovered a vehicle had been burglarized," police said in a statement. "As they began searching the area, they located an individual inside a second vehicle on Kenwood Drive. Officers attempted to detain the burglary suspect and he fled on foot. After a brief foot chase, officers caught up to the suspect, and attempted to place him into custody. At that time the officers did not know the suspect was armed with a handgun. While attempting to handcuff the suspect, one officer was shot and other officers on scene began rendering first aid and called for Longview Fire EMS."

The officer was transported to a Longview medical center with non-life threatening injuries.

The suspect, whom was not identified by police, is facing multiple charges.
